Came to us as a 2 year old. He had been left in a field along with five other youngsters, all of which were bought by us for a nominal fee. Unfortunately, one of the herd, a six month old colt, was so poorly he had to be put to sleep. The other four ponies, a New Forest colt, 2 Welsh Sec A colts and a filly, have all gone to loving family homes.

advertised in the paper by a riding school as a companion free to good home. We were told he had a rearing problem and was dangerous to ride. On getting him home, we found him in an emaciated state (under his rug - it was winter and he was turned out knee-deep in mud with no food) and very cautious about people. It has taken almost three years to get Monty back to full physical and mental health and he has since hacked across Salisbury Plain with no problems whatsoever.

An ex-racehorse, probably bought very cheaply, abandoned in a field at livery. Jack can be very excitable and a bit ‘riggy’ and we think the person who bought him probably found they had taken on too much but, rather than pass him on to someone more experienced, they just left him. We bought him for a nominal fee. He was scared, aggressive and very underweight but he has now settled well and is a real lovely character, although he still has his odd ‘moments’!

Rescued by the RSPCA after being reported by clients at New Barn Farm, Clayton at Easter 2010. Harry was in a field on the Downs with eleven others of various ages and types, one of which was very badly injured and was sadly put to sleep at the scene. Harry is impeccably behaved and very sociable and has clearly been someone’s cherished friend at some point in his past; we’re sure that if his previous owner knew what had happened to him they would be devastated - we’ve all sold horses on in good faith but the truth is, once they are gone we have relinquished all control over their care.

Came to us recently as she had some behavioural issues and had all but terrified her owner. Girlie isn’t really the sort of case we would normally take on as she was very well cared for and loved but her owner felt her options were running very short and she is still so young so we agreed to take her. Girlie has been out of racing for two years (Wordy’s Girl). She is a lovely horse but she needs a leader in order to feel secure, although we hope that this need will diminish as she becomes more used to a life outside of racing.
Girlie is now available for loan .

Jess has come to us to enjoy her retirement. She is not strictly a ‘rescue’ but it was a case of taking her or letting her be put to sleep as she suffers from a locking stifle. This means she must be turned out as much as possible to keep the joints moving and unfortunately, as her previous home had no winter grazing, the vet did not feel her chances of survival over the coming winter would be very good. Jess has a very pronounced sway back and must not be ridden, however, she has enjoyed a full career as a showjumper

Snip came to the Centre when his owner – who had bred him - passed away. However, it wasn’t until we went to collect him that we found he had been kept in an 8x8 stable, on his own, with his only turnout in an overgrown sand paddock. He had also been kept in an anti-cast roller, which had been on for so long that it had caused pressure sores across his back and withers, which has now resulted in permanent loss of the hair pigmentation. We gather his treatment may have also been more ‘traditional’, as he can be very wary, particularly around his head. Having said this, he is a very sweet natured horse and has been no trouble at all on the yard. he has reputedly jumped successfully at Hickstead and it would be a shame to waste his talent and affection.
Snip is now available to loan.

Toby
Toby is an 8 month old Gypsy Vanner colt who arrived at the Centre at the beginning of December 2010.
He was brought from Walsall,West Midlands, where he had been taken in by a local yard .Toby had a nasty abcess on his neck and extremely long hooves as well as being very underweight and small for his age.
As he is still just a baby, Toby will be at the Centre until he is old enough to be backed and schooled for riding
